Introduction

The Department of Industrial Design has a goal of nurturing designers equipped with creativity in the industrial design area of information-oriented and knowledge-based society.

In particular, it focuses on educating various ways to solve various problems of design by understanding trends in the knowledge-based industry resulting from the development of information and communications technology. It aims at raising designers that will contribute to the future development of industrial design by teaching creative ability to shape design factors and characteristics through the recognition of the necessity of tangible and intangible tools, and environment with education programs such as product design, transportation equipment design, environment design and interactive media design.

History

The College of Design and Art was first approved and installed as the Department of Applied Arts in the College of Family in 1968. The College of Design and Art has continued to revise and supplement its educational system to overcome its difficulties as a local university for growing and graduating many qualified students constantly.

In the midst of rapidly changing university environments to the social changes caused by informationization, the College of Design and Art divided the School of Art and Design to the School of Fine Arts and School of Design in August 2001 in order to construct an educational system that meets the needs of the times, in order to find ways to help the university grow.

    SEMINAR FOR ACADEMIC LIFE
    1. Summary of the course This course is to assist university freshmen in CRM designing to adapt university life well through the instruction and counselling of supervising professor. (This course is composed of self analysis, personality type test, career research, instruction for the success of university life, career plan and direction setting, CRM designing method and CRM designing. The course should be teaching in classes of the students by supervising professor.) 2. Course objectives This course is to motivate the students before the mid term exam and provide students with self analysis, personality type test (MBTI or TCI) and career research (YAT test). Also, this course shall has a plan to instruct the students to enhance the efficiency of university life through career and time management. In addition, this course is to make a chance for the students to have practical assistance to university life by providing study method, report designing strategy and the information on academic system and various kinds of internal programs of the university. After the mid term exam, the students will be instructed to set the direction of career designing through continuous counselling of supervising professor and the students will be able to establish CRM designing and execution plan.

    SUSTAINABLE PUBLIC DESIGN
    To create economic growth with protecting the environment and keep the nature for sustainable development was issued at the 21st century and potential desire for improving the quality of public environmental area and life style enabled the public design. Collaborating experts from various disciplines and convergence thinking is important in public design to approach and to be understood. Considering the process of ecological approach to nature should be extended to areas beyond the traditional design of the system and the system encourages innovation and design based design should be combined.     FUNDAMENTAL DESIGN I
    By taking this course, students look at 3 design components, line, plane and volume and how they relate to structure, surface and form in two dimension and three dimension design.

    ID TECHNICAL DRAWING
    Technical drawings are means of communication method of expression needed to the designer for the production transferred and developing the content of the finished object. The main objective of this course is to cultivate and training the basic knowledge and skills of technical drawing including projections, sections, dimensions and etc.

    DIGITAL 2D DESIGN
    As the basic course of computer graphics for design, this class emphasize the learning of various expression skills of 2D programs. Students build up their ability to express ideas efficiently by using computers in the process of design.

    ID STUDIO Ⅰ
    This is an introductory studio class that approaches the expertise of industrial design. In order to proceed with industrial design, students acquire problem-solving skills and rational modeling skills according to functions.

    READING AND DISCUSSION
    This class aims to make students realize the joy of readings as well as understand the deep structure of their own lives by reading and criticizing literatures such as poems and novels. Further, this class attempts to have students learn the wisdom and courage with which they will perform the true value of their own lives.

    SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION AND SERVICE
    This course is to cultivate community sense as members of society and the global village for students in order to develop the basic knowledge required as global citizens. Especially, this course is to foster the spirit of cooperation, sharing, service, and creativity and study the social contribution and leadership to solving the challenges the global community faces. As a liberal arts course, it is centered to nurture a leader having the global capability to contribute to community development through learning the knowledge and the case on the value & logic of social responsibility focused on environmental preservation, social contribution, and good governance(ESG). This course aims to foster a generous mind, learn knowledge and technology and build the capacity to contribute to building a society towards a safer and happier world through the study of theory and practice.

    SOFTWARE AND AI
    Software and AI (Artificial Intelligence) course aims to educate the basic concepts of software and computational thinking to use them in various applications. It allows students of various majors to experience the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, such as big data, machine learning, and AI. It also introduces various applications of AI so that students can easily apply these technologies to their field of study. This course classifies the lecture types into three categories, and adjust the lecture difficulty according to the student's academic ability.

    FUNDAMENTAL DESIGN Ⅱ
    The courses will help students to develop their fundamental aesthetic sensibility and creativity in design field. Students also explore a broad range of basic design knowledge and techniques.

    INDUSTRIAL IDENTITY DESIGN
    The class provides and introduction to the discipline, function and basic aspects of letterform as it relates to product and industrial design. Emphasis will be on the interrelationships of letter, word, line and grid in brand identity. The Objective of this course is to understand the fundamental principles of typographic design and information design, in addition to working with the tools, vocabulary, and technology available to the industrial designer for designing brand identity.

    BASIC STYLE STUDIO
    This class designed to understand the design language as a style and principle of form generation. Students will be practicing object rebuilding through design appearance case reading and original form design. These will include studies in: Gesture, Stance, Line weight, Color use, Contrast, Proportions.

    DESIGN IDEAS AND EXPRESSION TECHNIQUES
    To learn the direction and rule of observing things to draw 3 Dimensional goods into 2 Dimensional draft. The expectation drawing of expression ability through five classification steps as the expression methods of diagram drawing and design process based on Korea standard.

    NEW MEDIA CONTENTS DESIGN
    This class focuses on the new media contents creation strategies and techniques behind computer simulations. Content creation is the contribution of information to any media and most especially to digital media for an end-user/audience in specific contexts. Students will create a fully finished prototype for various media platforms, ready for presentation.

    Presentation design will build upon core principles of design and serve as an in depth look at the grid system in order to create effective and aesthetically pleasing layouts which engages the audience in a clear and concise manner. Students will be able to create effective design which employ strong and engaging concepts which are universally accepted. They will also be able to use the principles learned to develop their previous works and successfully market themselves.

    3D CONTENTS DESIGN
    3D modeling and animation have transformed numerous fields, including AR Reality, filmmaking, computer games, architecture and product design. This course provides an introduction to the exciting world of 3D content creation, while emphasizing its connection to the creative thought process. Students will learn an overview of the artist workflow as it relates to modeling, texturing, animation, lighting and rendering. This course offers a new dimension to the process of new media and design.

    DIGITAL DESIGN STUDIO Ⅰ
    As a relative course of design techniques, this course is about the computer application and the research for drawing and rendering as design expressions. Students realize the CAD and the existing 3D formation process into 2D or 3D digital formation and apply any movement so as to maximize the expression ability and the sense of space for virtual model and to learn the flexibility of thought and various kinds of mutation which able to be used in the development of design.

    QUALIFICATION CLASS FOR UPPER LEVEL ID (ADVENTURE DESIGN)
    This class is a subject of LINC + Adventure Design, where students discover topics themselves and form teams to conduct design projects. Early in the lesson, we learn the necessary design process and working knowledge in the major areas of industrial design, product, transportation, environment, and UX Design. Students then freely set topics and team projects on a wide range of topics, and with the help of learners, produce final design deliverables. In this lesson, I would like to be able to have "ability to set problem" beyond 'problem solving ability' in student-driven curriculum.

    User experience design is a term used to describe the overall experience and satisfaction a user has when using a product or system. It most commonly refers to a combination of software and business topics, such as selling over the web, but it applies to any result of interaction design. The course introduces not only new design process but also usability. Specially, it focuses on understanding users through observation methods and creating user scenarios. Also it fully encompasses traditional industrial design and extends it by addressing all aspects of a product or service as perceived by users.
